Lancaster Maternity Session | What color should I wear?

I have a special place in heart for this Lancaster maternity session featured below. It feels like yesterday that I was photographing their wedding, but now they have been married for TWO years and they just had the most precious little newborn boy. These two chose not to find out if their baby was a boy or a girl until he or she was born. Maybe you might have wondered what to colors to wear for your maternity session if you are waiting to find out, too. The most common colors to wear during a maternity session are pastel pink, blue, green, or white/ivory. Pastel or muted colors are best for the airy look.

Q – So, what color should I wear for my maternity session?

I want to preface my answer by letting you know that when it comes down to it, you should choose whatever you prefer for you. Just because you are expecting a baby boy, it does not mean that you have to wear blue for your maternity session. Likewise, just because you are pregnant with a girl, it does not mean that you have to wear pink. In the situation where you are choosing to be surprised when your baby is born, you are not going to ruin the moment wearing pink for your maternity session. I hope that you feel some freedom now that is out of the way!

With that in mind, there are a couple different ways to approach what colors to wear. Read more below!

For a girl

If you are expecting a girl, pink is typically a natural choice, but I do not think you should feel restricted to it. Little girl colors can be so versatile. My best recommendation is to think through what kind of outfits you are looking at for your newborn session, as well as what colors you are using in the nursery. Is it important to you to keep the colors consistent? When purchasing an album or wall gallery collection, you want the colors to at least coordinate. A very pale pink could look nice by a pastel blue, but I would avoid a brighter pink and blue together. Instead, choose a pink and white or pink and green.

For a boy

When expecting a boy, my recommendation is to choose white, blue, or green. When planning to coordinate with the newborn session, I believe it is best to avoid the pink and blue together, unless you are using a pale pink. These colors will work well in your nursery or in an album together.

When you want to be surprised

If you are like Louise and Zach, you chose not to find out your baby’s gender before their birth. In that situation, the safest options would be white, blue, or green. This sweet couple (pictured below) chose blue and white because they both have stunningly beautiful blue eyes. They ended up with a perfect little boy, so it worked out wonderfully! That being said, if they had a girl they could have easily dressed her and themselves in a white or green and it would have still been just as lovely!

Are you ready to plan your Lancaster maternity session? I would love to hear from you!
